We went to the seminary tonight for the first of four Tuesday night lectures in the St. Tikhon's Lecture Series. Fr. Joseph Purpura spoke about Raising Children in the Church. It was very well done. Luke even enjoyed it--actually, he enjoyed the donuts and pretzels, but was good nonetheless. You'll notice me on the left side of the picture. Bishop TIKHON is wearing the hat, and Fr. Joseph is the bearded priest next to him. Check out stots.edu for more pictures.
I heard a story about a Fire Dept. in San Diego that attempted to have the first all-female engine. On one of their calls, they had a 500 pound patient who needed to be moved. So there were 4 women on the engine, plus two more women paramedics. What happened? They had to call ANOTHER engine because the 6 of them couldn't move the patient. 6! That was probably the most egregious of the calls, but I'm sure there are more stories. Anyhoo, my source told me that this all-women engine lasted for 3 months before they disbanded it. Too much fighting.
Have a good one.

So they really should use a different background to take the pictures. It looks like Habib and Bishop TIKHON have float heads. Anyway, I'd be interested to read/hear Fr. Joseph's first lecture ... hint, hint. Also, I'm sure your story about female fire stations can be tired to the lecture, but I can't quite figure out how. Thanks for totally confusing me.
The curtain is actually blue, and is way better than the corn-on-the-cob yellow paint on the brick wall. The photographer didn't get close enough to us for the camera to distinguish the dark blue from the black cassocks and jibbes. The whole gym feels like the setting for a prison basketball movie, with the asbestis walls, the stuffy circulation, the 1969 tile floor with a painted basketball court on it (and the painted lines are peeling) and the comfortable metal chairs. It's quite perplexing as to how anybody can ever fall asleep during any lecture in there...
Fr. Joseph's lecture, along with the remaining 3 Tuesday Night Lectures (coming up 9/30, 10/7, and 10/14), will be available via Podcast on Ancient Faith Radio, ancientfaith.com. But they will be available all at once as opposed to one at a time. I do have Fr. Joseph's written lecture and will mail a copy to someone in Eagle River. He deviated slightly from the written text, but it contains his main points, which had nothing to do with female firefighters.
As a post-script to the women fire department story, the storyteller--a former paramedic himself--said that the politics in fire departments are only slightly worse than the politics in The Church.
