Happy Feast day to the choirs and chantors around the world! It's the feast of St. Romanos the Melodist. Below is his story from the "Lives of the Saints" link you see on the right of this webpage. By the way, I spell it with an "o", not an "u". Don't ask why, cuz I don't know.
The Venerable Romanus the Melodist
Romanus was born in the Syrian town of Emesa. He was, at first, a sexton in Beirut, and later served in the cathedral church in Constantinople in the time of Patriarch Euthymius (490-504). Romanus was not well educated and was untrained in chanting, for which he was ridiculed by some of the more educated clergy. St. Romanus tearfully prayed to the Most-holy Theotokos, and she appeared to him in a dream, gave him a scroll, and told him to swallow it. The following day was the Feast of the Nativity. Romanus took his place as a chanter at the ambo, and with an angelic voice sang the hymn ``Today the Virgin….'' All were amazed at both the content of this hymn and at the magnificent singing of the chanter. Having received the poetic gift from the Theotokos, Romanus composed over a thousand Kontakia. Romanus entered into rest as a deacon of the Great Church, Hagia Sophia, in Constantinople. He joined the angelic choirs in the year 510.

I always thought it was interesting that other clergy made fun of Romanos for his lack of chanting ability, yet he was still the chanter on a feast day. Anyway, just something to think about.
Oh yeah, and by the way, you missed basketball practice last night. I expect perfect attendance from here on out!
Yeah, it is funny how Romanos was made fun of...good thing you guys made fun of me when I started. Gives me hope.
Oh, and I had my own basketball practice, thank you very much. I am co-captain of the St. Tikhon's team. We practice for 6 months just for one night of glory against St. Vlad's. Feb 7. Mark your calendar. I expect you to be in the stands scouting.
By the way, did James Kendall grow yet? He's supposed to be on steroids you know...
