Road Trip Day 10

12:31am- Welcome to Nevada! Jackpot NV has a few casinos.
12:32am- Enter Pacific Time Zone. Matthew drove another 65 miles from Jackpot to Wells.
12:28am- Matthew stops for gas and potty breaks in Wells.
12:37am- Stasia takes the wheel. Roughly 475 miles til we arrive in Sac, CA. 7 hours of driving. Kids are sleeping, Matthew's loud U2 music is replaced by "The Hobbit" Water, snickers and runts at hand.
2:00am- Stopped for 7 min to feed Emma
4:44am- I have made it to a Loves gas station having driven 313 miles. Only 173 miles to go. We are not going to call ahead to Matthew's parents to tell them were coming. :) SURPRISE!! During my drive I hit a lot of road construction and one way highways. If we had attempted this during the day it would have gone REALLY SLOW with traffic. Instead I was slowing down a little bit, but not much. Speed limit 75 mph all the way.
4:50am- Matthew has his mountain dew and snickers and loud music. We are ready to finish this road trip and be done driving long distances for a while with crying, fussy and whining kids. Luke, Hannah and Emma will be SO HAPPY to be done road tripping.
5:06am- Hit Reno, lots of blinking lights.
5:08am- Saw our first In-N-Out. Darn it's closed.
5:23am- Welcome to CA
5:38am- Border control stole our oranges.
7:12am- Arrived at Howell grandparents. Sent Luke and Hannah up the the door to knock and tell Grandma Sally "were hungry, can we have breakfast?" A very surprised Grandma Sally answers the door.
9ish am- Grandpa Stephen home and not too surprised to see us. Matthew has already gone to bed. He was exhausted!! Mary went to lie down and read shortly after Matthew. At some point this morning I layed Emma down by Mary to sleep, left Luke and Hannah with G-ma and took a nap too.
11pm something- Up from my much needed nap. Matthew went to get In-N-Out for lunch.
1pm something- G-pa home with a new trike for the kids.
Spent the day playing and resting. Sally and I went shopping and got some school stuff done for her. Kids played outside in the kiddie pool and inside with there horde of toys. So happy to not be driving anywhere.
7pm something- Jonathan came over for dinner. Hannah is already asleep. Guys watching sports and Mary reading outside in the sun and warm weather.

I think I'm going to need a bit more info on "Border control stole our oranges". That is just too random.

I'm glad you guys made it. Enjoy CA.

The state of California doesn't want bugs coming in on out-of-state produce, flowers, plants, etc. So they asked where we came from (Montana), and then asked if we had a cooler. I said yes. "Sir, we'll need to see that cooler." So I popped open the door and opened the cooler for the lady. She pulled out the bag of oranges we had, then asked where we bought them. "Carbondale, PA." "Uhh, sir, we'll need to confiscate these oranges. You may close the door and continue on your way now." I told her, "Enjoy those oranges; they're really good." I think there were three left in the bag.

Interestingly, she did not take the apples. I think it's like TSA: they take your stuff, then enjoy it themselves.

I guess it kind of makes sense.
So what if you had a loaded gun in your cooler? Or an illegal alien? Would they have let those pass but still taken the oranges? Coolers ... the number one source of contraband in the state of CA. I guess you should have stuffed them into your luggage like at the airport. They didn't take an TSA style 'photos' did they?

At some point you'll need to compare 'border patrol' stories with Ben and his crew to see who is worse CA or Canada.

Oops. I didn't know my wife's account was logged in. The above post was me (and I guess this one too)

At least they let the kids sleep. No TSA photos. And you're probably right about the illegal aliens in the cooler. They only do something about them if you drive a U-Haul loaded with 30 illegal aliens (a la Men in Black).

Sounds like Ben, Hans, and Peter's experience in Canada was much worse. I half expected this to happen, but was hoping to get by.
